    Overview of the program

Welcome to the website for the Family Financial Planning and Counseling program at the University of Alabama. The financial planning degree focuses on planning, investing, decision-making, and asset management to help individuals and families secure their present situation and future. The degree entails the study of consumers--their behavior, what motivates them to buy or not to buy, their rights and privileges as the driving force in the marketplace and the services offered to them. Coursework includes retirement planning, risk management, estate planning, investments, personal income taxation and more. The major in Consumer Sciences with a concentration in Financial Planning has been registered with the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. Therefore, students who successfully complete the concentration may sit for the CFP® certification Examination that leads to the professional CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification.  Our degrees also fulfill the educational requirements to sit for the Accredited Financial Counselor® exam, which is offered through the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education®. Offered in Tuscaloosa since 1987 and also totally online since 2007, our degrees concentrating in financial planning and counseling offer a rewarding career with growth potential, work-life balance and satisfaction from helping others.

We look forward to meeting and discussing the program with you. If you have any additional questions regarding the program that are not covered on this site, please contact us.

CFP® and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ are certification marks owned by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board). These marks are awarded to individuals who successfully complete the CFP Board’s initial and ongoing certification requirements. The University of Alabama does not certify individuals to use the CFP® and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ marks. CFP® certification is granted solely by the CFP Board to individuals who, in addition to completing an educational requirement such as this CFP Board-Registered Program, have met ethics, experience and examination requirements.
